Understanding Dental Emergencies
What is considered a dental emergency?
There are a few situations when a dental emergency arises. Number one is, of course, acute pain. As everybody knows, dental pain is one of the worst pains that anybody can experience, and that is the most important thing. When the tooth starts hurting, you are not able to sleep, eat, close your mouth, or anything like that.
The second thing is swelling. It is an emergency because you don't want that swelling to keep getting bigger and bigger, as our teeth are very near other important parts of the body. You want to make sure that you take care of those dental emergencies.
When do I see an emergency dentist versus going for a regular dental appointment?
If you are going to your regular dental appointment, you are probably not going to have a dental emergency. Of course, a dental emergency would be if you hurt yourself or your tooth breaks or something like that. A dental emergency occurs when you haven't been going to the dentist, you have a lot of cavities, and that infection flares up, causing swelling and pain. At that time, you will need to see a dentist.
Why would you need an emergency root canal?
Emergency root canals are done when you have an infection or if the tooth is broken, causing severe sensitivity. At that time, we will have to numb you. If you have an infection, we might have to prescribe you some medication. If not, and if we are able to numb you properly, we do the treatment. Basically, the emergency root canal is done when you have a broken tooth, and it's very sensitive.
Does Hulen Smiles offer same-day care?
Yes, we do offer same-day care. We do emergency root canals and fillings if your tooth is fractured or if you have pain. If we can provide the emergency dental care the same day instead of giving you antibiotics, we will do the same-day treatment.
There are other situations as well, such as inflamed gums due to any issues with your gums, a broken tooth, or a cap that fell off. We do offer same-day treatment.
